Archaeological research at CHES reconstructs past human behavior through the material record, spanning early hominin contexts. Projects integrate excavation, stratigraphy, material culture analysis, and landscape approaches to examine subsistence strategies, fire use, settlement patterns, colonial encounters, and human impacts on environments across deep time.
CHES archaeology also has a strong focus on microarchaeology and phytolith analysis, using microscopic plant remains, sediment analysis, and geoarchaeological techniques to investigate site formation processes, fire use, plant exploitation, and anthropogenic activity at high resolution.
